On the Parque Nacional de Garajonay's southern border, this charmingly rustic institution is the island's must-try for La Gomera cuisine in all its simple deliciousness. Efigenia started cooking for local road engineers in 1960. The communal tables and set family-style vegetarian menu are still here: puchero gofio (vegetable-based stew), mixed salad, almogrote and almond flan, plus homemade cakes, juices and lemonade.
Doña Efigenia is a gracious hostess who makes a point of talking to all her guests. These days her family helps out with the business, which has expanded to encompass a bodega and accommodation. For breakfast, it's tortilla, fresh juices, cakes and coffee, and you can also buy Efigenia's own-label wine, potent orange liquor, marmalade and jams here.
