Waverley Inn

Halifax

In business since 1876, this lemon-yellow inn has rooms with their own little quirks, from bold antiques to luxurious linens, swagged curtains and Turkish rugs. It feels rather theatrical, and fittingly the guest book includes both Oscar Wilde and PT Barnum. The period building means that, apart from the suites, rooms are small, and some are only accessible by stairs.
