On the edge of Bow Lake, the historic Num-Ti-Jah Lodge is full to the brim with backcountry nostalgia. Built by pioneer Jimmy Simpson in 1923 (12 years before the highway), the carved-wood interior displays animal heads and photos from the golden age. The 16 rooms have big views, but show their age with worn furniture, dated decor and tiny bathrooms.
There are plenty of walking trails straight out the door from the lodge; bears frequent the grounds. The on-site restaurant is grand, and there's a pleasant downstairs sitting area with leather armchairs, stained-glass tabletops and a pool table.
