The 1926-built Buchan, just steps from Stanley Park, has bags of charm. Facilities were being upgraded on our visit and while prices have risen somewhat with the arrival of new owners, sleepovers here are still typically good value, especially off-season. There's a wide array of rooms, including some with shared bathrooms, but all are clean and well maintained. Expect friendly front-deskers.
There's also a comfy guest lounge; other extras include storage facilities for bikes and skis as well as handy laundry machines. If you're driving, there's some free parking around the neighborhood, or you can pay $10 to park overnight at the hotel (spaces limited). There are many midrange dining options nearby, including a charming Italian restaurant at the base of the building.
