Shaw's Hotel & Cottages

Prince Edward Island

With its red roof, geranium-filled window boxes and stripy awnings, Shaw's offers a cheery welcome – as befits Canada's oldest family-operated inn (founded 1860!). Unsurprisingly, rooms feel old-fashioned – flock wallpaper, dated furnishings – but have a certain homey charm. Self-catering chalets offer more comfort (although older cottages don't have kitchens), and the beach is just a 600m walk away.

The dining room is open to outside guests (mains $18 to $30); reservations are recommended for the popular Sunday-evening buffet (held in July and August).
