The Barracks

Brisbane

Comprising three big heritage-listed buildings, the Barracks now houses the six-screen Palace Barracks cinema as well as a major supermarket, liquor store and a small handful of shops and casual eateries. Take a footbridge across from Roma St Station, or a short walk from Caxton St in Petrie Terrace.

The Barracks served as a gaol (1860 to 1883) and police depot (until the 1940s) before sitting derelict for decades. Reopened as a mixed-use development in 2008, it garnered national awards in the realm of urban renewal, with Brisbanites embracing it as their own (noir history and all).
