A report by holiday price comparison site, TravelSupermarket, has outlined the best value cities in Europe for a shorthaul break from the UK this autumn. As well as city breaks that will cost travellers the least amount of money, it also outlines the destinations that cost the most and those that are the most popular from the UK.
To come up with its rankings, the website’s Best Value Index ranked the median price of a flight and accommodation package, a three-course meal at a medium-level restaurant and a pint in 50 short-haul city destinations, based on departures from September 2019 and the end of March 2020. It found that the cheapest destinations include 1. Vilnius 2. Bucharest 3. Hamburg 4. Belfast 5. Turin 6. Barcelona 7. Berlin 8. Milan 9. Madrid and 10. Sofia. Barcelona and Berlin also feature in the top ten list of the most popular breaks from the UK, with Amsterdam coming in first place.
Coming top of the list of cheapest destinations, Lithuania's capital city has a lot to recommend it. According to TravelSupermarket, the price for Vilnius comes it at £111.23 (€122.86) for a flight and accommodation package, a three-course meal and a pint. Its Old Town has a rare authenticity, and its pebbly streets are lined with weather-worn period buildings that hide cafés, boutiques and dainty guesthouses. Though a capital city, Vilnius feels much like an overgrown village. It's carpeted with green spaces, which cover around 40% of its area, and is studded with venerable Catholic and Orthodox church spires.
“The cost of your city break can differ hugely, depending on where you opt to go," says Emma Coulthurst, travel commentator for TravelSupermarket. "If you don’t want to overspend, you need to look at the package price (flights and hotel) but also exchange rates and the cost of living in that destination. TravelSupermarket’s Best Value Index helps holidaymakers seek out the destinations where their money will go a lot further, and those that they might want to avoid if they don’t want to burn a hole in their pocket."
