Hôtel el-Djazaïr

Algiers

Kipling, Gide, Churchill and Eisenhower all stayed in this gracious place, locally known as the St George. It's lost some of its dusty ambience to recent renovations, but gained a smart, business outlook and a lot more comfort. The real draws, though, are the location, lavish public areas and heritage gardens. There are four restaurants, a bar and a pool.

Big discounts are often offered on rooms almost before you've had time to say hello. It's on a hill directly above the city centre (but it would be a bit of a walk) from where there are wonderful city views.
