Shaw House, an emblematic ‘butterfat palace,’ was the first permanent structure in Ferndale, completed by founding father Seth Shaw in 1854. Today, it’s California’s oldest B&B, set back on extensive grounds. Original details remain, including painted wooden ceilings. Most of the rooms have private entrances, and three have private balconies overlooking the large garden with its magnificent shady trees and suitably situated benches.
