1914 Battle of the Falklands Memorial

Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

This obelisk, just past Government House, commemorates a WWI naval engagement. On December 8, 1914, nine British ships, refueling in Stanley, quickly responded to the sighting of five German cruisers that had surprised them earlier in southern Chile. The British sank four of the cruisers in the battle, in which 1871 Germans lost their lives. Just 10 British seamen were killed.
