In the Ésera valley's beautiful upper reaches, 2km towards La Besurta off the A139, this 55-room mountain lodge borders on the luxurious. It has a spa, bar, museum and restaurant.
The hotel's museum tells the history of the Hospital de Benasque, which started out in the 12th century, 600m down the valley, as a refuge for trans-Pyrenean travellers run by the Knights Hospitaller. (The recently excavated remains of the original buildings can be seen just below the A139 about 100m before that road's end.) It moved to its current site in 1840 and began functioning as a hotel in the 1870s.
