El Fossar de les Moreres

Opposite the Basílica de Santa Maria del Mar's eastern flank, an eternal flame burns brightly over a steel arch and an apparently anonymous sunken square: El Fossar de les Moreres (Mulberry Cemetery), the site of a Roman cemetery. Catalan resistance fighters – for whom the flame burns – were buried here after the siege of Barcelona ended in defeat in September 1714.
