Remains of Almería’s Islamic past are evident throughout the city, including at this church, which was built over the remains of the city’s former mosque in the Almedina neighbourhood. The 10th-century mosque was almost completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1522, but its mihrab (a prayer niche indicating the direction of Mecca), and the qiblah wall in which it's set, survived.
