Burrastow House

Shetland

This fine old haa – the 18th-century seat of the local laird – sits in a lovely location on the shore of Vaila Sound, a couple of miles southwest of Walls. Most of the bedrooms are in the modern extension – the Laird's Room in the old house is the one to go for, with a grand half-tester bed and views across to Vaila Island.

The restaurant (set dinners £35) serves fresh local seafood and lamb, and the breakfast table groans with home-baked bread and croissants, porridge, kippers and local smoked salmon. Wi-fi is patchy. Seals and bird life are abundant.
