Echoing the sìhéyuàn layout of traditional Beijing courtyards, this was the living quarters of Empress Cixi, and still contains items of period furniture. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by British and French soldiers in 1860. The bronze deer, crane and vase in front of the main hall symbolise peace, while the magnolias, begonias and peonies represent prosperity.
