Hôtel Ambedjele

Mali

Styled like a Dogon village just off the road between Mopti and Sévaré, this charming Spanish-run place has expansive gardens, a rock pool for swimming and stunning bungalows that are shaped like a Dogon granary.

The rooms are not huge but they are beautifully decorated with terracotta basins, exposed stone walls and stylistic flourishes throughout. The rooms have mosquito nets and the grounds are sprayed twice daily, which means you can take your evening drink by the pool without fear of being eaten alive. They've only been open for a few years and new buildings built in the traditional Dogon style are still being added - we particularly like the entrance which is designed like a toguna (a low-roofed shelter where the elders meet in Dogon villages). The garden bar is a delight, while Bamako expats in the know say that the restaurant (Spanish flair wedded to African flavours) is one of the best in Mali. You also won't find a cleaner kitchen or fresher ingredients than you do here.
