Le Campement

Mali

This sprawling, centrally located place is Djenné's tourism central with dozens of rooms across a wide price range, a large and pleasant open-air restaurant and clean and tidy rooms that have the bare essentials.

Once the tourists season kicks into gear (especially from November to January) this places overflows with travellers, their guides, drivers and just about anyone who's anyone in Djenné's tourist scene. At such times, don't even think of turning up here without a reservation. The spartan annexe rooms are newer and whitewashed within an inch of their lives, but they suffer from the unfortunate problem of mosquito nets which block the air generated by the fan - you're in for a hot night so consider dragging your mattress out into the courtyard. Meals are generally three courses - often a soup, followed by pasta or a local rice dish and fruit - and definitely the most consistent in town when it comes to quality. The Campement's location is as good as it gets, a stone's throw from the outer stalls of the Monday market extravaganza and an easy stroll to the otherworldly Grande Mosquée.
