The Danum Valley Field Centre is an outpost for scientists and researchers that also welcomes wildlife enthusiasts. Accommodation is organised into four categories: hostel, resthouse, VIP and camping. We recommend the resthouse, with basic clean rooms, ceiling fans and twin beds, located by the canteen. The simple hostel is about a seven-minute walk from the canteen, and consists of two longhouse-style gender-segregated rooms.
Towels are provided for the cold-water showers (hot water in VIP Chalets). Electricity is only on from 7am to 11pm; dorms tend to get hot and stuffy. The VIP chalets come with air-con, but this only works when there's electricity. Walks start from the canteen, so if you're staying in the dorms you'll constantly be walking between the two. If you want to camp, you can lay your sleeping kit (no tent needed) out on the covered, built-for-purpose platform complete with mossy nets – bug spray still recommended!
Guests take their meals in the cafeteria-style canteen (veggie friendly). Near the camp is a clear stretch of shallow river in which to cool off.
