The owner of this unpretentious, welcoming inn speaks some English, Italian and Spanish. It's a great place to have your first ryokan experience, as most staff are able to communicate well with travellers, especially over the wonderful kaiseki (Japanese haute cuisine) dinner. Corner upstairs rooms have lovely views. You can also stop by for lunch – try the Kiso Valley trout (¥1350).
