Greville Arms Hotel

The Midlands

Dating from 1884, this grande-dame hotel with gilt mirrors, statues, dark oil paintings and chandeliers has 40 spacious rooms with plush carpets and patterned wallpaper. James Joyce allegedly frequented the establishment; the James Joyce Restaurant and Ulysses Bar (with a beer garden) are named for him. Its small museum covering Westmeath's and Ireland's ancient history has an early Ulysses edition.
