Maison Souquet

Top choice in Montmartre & Northern Paris

During the Belle Époque, this mansion sheltered a discreet brothel run by Madame Souquet, which provided the inspiration for its conversion by French interior designer Jacques Garcia into an intimate, five-star boutique hotel. Its 20 ravishing rooms, suites and apartments, with richly patterned wallpapers, silks and embroideries, are named for courtesans, while its lounge areas reflect the bordello's former salons.

Along with a glass-roofed winter garden there's a wood-panelled bar and a library, with a small swimming pool and hammam in the basement. Look for the art nouveau red lanterns out front.
