Bordeaux

Queues to pay are a constant feature at this vast maze of a private bookshop, founded in 1896 and always packed with Bordelais browsing books in several different languages. There are excellent English-language and travel sections, including maps and guides. French philosopher, writer and scholar Charles Montesquieu (1689–1755) lived in one of the five adjoining townhouses that form this vast book empire.
