Three Crowns

Dartmoor National Park

There's heritage galore at this solid, stone-walled inn overlooking Chagford's square. Parts of the structure date from the 11th century, which explains the wildly wonky floors, grandfather clocks, log-burning stoves and gilt-framed paintings. Bedrooms are much more modern: cosy fabrics in rich colours and stylish bathrooms.

The restaurant is reliable too, from pubby burgers and bangers (£12 to £18) to more upmarket mains of lamb shank and pork belly (£15 to £19).
