Colonial Gate 4D Cinema

Top choice in Santo Domingo

Tucked away in the deep southeastern corner of the Zona Colonial, this hidden treasure is the country's first '4D' movie theater. The first three dimensions are what you'd expect, but the fourth brings in the elements – mist, fog, wind, heat, smells, motion seats and bubbles. Admission includes three short films and headsets that translate them into nine languages.

The Great Wall of China and Pirates 7D are fantastic films for the thrills, but the most impressive (and award-winning) flick is The Battle of Santo Domingo, which the theater itself produced. During the film, which envisions the 1586 invasion of Sir Francis Drake, old Santo Domingo is brought to life as viewers feel they are flying over the city walls, getting slashed by pirate swords and dodging cannon balls.
