Nírén Zhāng

Top choice in Tianjin

Trading under the name of the artist (Zhang Mingshen) who invented Tianjin's most famous craftwork almost 200 years ago, the inconspicuous first-floor premises of Nírén Zhāng is a wonderful place to browse for Tiānjīn Nírén (天津泥人) – playful childlike clay figurines representing traditional Chinese activities and traits.

Figures start at around ¥20, and go up into the thousands, but most cost less than ¥100. Prices are marked and fixed, but very reasonable. To get here, take bus 871 three stops from Zhanjiang Lu (湛江路) bus stop in Wudadao, or bus 870 six stops from Anshandao metro station, and get off at Lao Wei Li (劳卫里) bus stop. Walk ahead and turn right (onto Machang Dao) then bear left and walk to the end. The building is in the far right corner with two giant clay figures standing guard outside.
