The 30 bars that cram together on Oude Markt form one huge mass of happy drinkers whose chatter and midnight whoops reverberate around the baroque gables. This extraordinary array of pubs collectively has the local nickname 'Europe's Longest Bar'. It's one of Leuven's most remarkable sights and a must-see even if you rush away in terror to drink somewhere more sedate.
It's most active in university term time (mid-September to June), when you'll generally find at least one place open at any hour. Many bars close in summer.
